MEDITATION SCRIPTURE: “They chose new gods; then was war in the gate: was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel” (judg.5:8)
READ: JUDGES 5:3-8
Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, even I, will sing unto the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel. 4 LORD, when thou wentest out of Seir, when thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped water. 5 The mountains melted from before the LORD, even that Sinai from before the LORD God of Israel. 6 In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, and the travellers walked through byways. 7 The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel. 8 They chose new gods; then was war in the gates: was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?
In her song of praise, Deborah highlighted the major cause of Israel’s captivity. “They chose new gods’’. The story is not different today; the church has chosen new gods. Some worship and serve the god of Marmon.
They can do anything as long it yields money and other material benefits. Some others served the god of fashion. They are fashion crazy, always on the lookout to discover what is in vogue. When the so called “ trendy fashion” is not decent and godly, they cue in because they want to maintain their popularity and be the face of one godless organization or another. Some, though in the church, have fully swung back into tradition.
They defend the godless traditions of their people and even attempt to bring such into the body of Christ. For some others, worldly pleasures and amusement are their gods. They spent countless hours on social media, internet, and other electronic gadgets looking for the gist and trending issues. Have you chosen new gods? The truth is, the moment Israel chose new gods, captivity followed. Are you surprised that some believers suffer the same fate with unbelievers? Have you noticed the level of darkness engulfing many churches today?
Does it not touch you that many times God’s people cry when there is no answer, no help or no comfort? It could be that He has left the church to her new gods. You cannot choose a new god and expect Jehovah to answer you in the day of trouble.
TURNING POINT: You cannot choose a new god and expect Jehovah to answer you in the day of trouble.
PRAYER POINT: Father, deliver me from every form of idolatry.
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 1CHRON.6,7; JN 8:21-36
