MEDITATION SCRIPTURE: “And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their alters; but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this”. (Judg.2:2).
READ: JUDGES 2:1-5
And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.
2 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?
3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.
4 And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
5 And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.
Disobedience is the product of a rebellious heart. It is not just an act, it is a spirit that captures an individual, always giving him good reasons why he must not agree with the standard rules.
In the first instance where disobedience was recorded in the scriptures, the case of our first parent Adam and Eve, Satan didn’t just pluck the fruit and put it in their mouths and persuaded them to take a bite. No!
He gave them good reasons why they should think otherwise. He appealed to their sense of reason and by the time he convinced Eve, he didn’t have to pluck the fruit for her, she plucked it by herself and even shared with her husband.
A lot of people, who live the life of disobedience today, whether their spouse, parents, or delegated authority, do so with a conviction that they are just being themselves or being civilized. The Israelite; they were being wise when they decided to make a league with the people of the land.
They entered into marriages with them and used them as servants instead of destroying them utterly as God had commanded. In the long run, they paid dearly for their error because they were soon lured into Idolatry.
This led to loss of favour with God and they became slaves to their enemies. The fruit of disobedience, no matter how succulent, have bitter seeds that grow to become strange patterns, destroying generations.
TURNING POINT: The fruit of disobedience, no matter how succulent, have bitter seeds that grow to become strange patterns, destroying generations.
PRAYER POINT: Father, deliver me from the spirit of disobedience.
