MEDITATION SCRIPTURE: “Do therefore according to thy wisdom and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace”. (1kgs.2:6)
READ: 1 KINGS 2:5-7
5 Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet. 6 Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace. 7 But shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom thy brother.
Part of David’s hand over activities to Solomon was for him to take care of certain unfinished business of the Kingdom so that his reign will be established. David instructed Solomon to take revenge on Joab the son of Zuriah. This may sound unfair knowing that Joab was one of David’s hit men. He was one of the mighty men of David, but he had so much innocent blood on his hand. After the death of Saul, Abner, Saul’s captain defected to David and promised to help him recover the whole kingdom. In return for this kind gesture, David promised to make him the captain of the army. Abner never lived to see this good day because Joab murdered him in cold blood. (2Sam.3:26-33)
Next was Amasa, Joab’s own cousin. He was also murdered because David decided to give him Joab’s position. It was Joab who schemed the return of Absalom to the kingdom after he murdered his brother Amnon. Joab did all these evils without any remorse. Many years had gone, he remained the army commander, fought various wars and had many victories but today, his old records were opened and he had to pay for his wickedness. Dear friend, always know that there is a day of reckoning. Every seed sown produces a harvest. That God did not Judge and probably kill you immediately you committed that crime does not mean you will go scot free. Judgment delayed is an act of God’s benevolent mercy, offering the transgressor the opportunity for repentance. Any misuse of such privilege eventually leads to destruction.
TURNING POINT: Judgment delayed is an act of God’s benevolent mercy, offering the transgressor the opportunity for repentance. Any misuse of such privilege eventually leads to destruction.
PRAYER POINT: Lord, help me to sow good seeds so that my harvest will be praise worthy.
