The Lagos State Government has warned husbands against forcing their wives to have sex without consent, saying such conduct could attract life imprisonment.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Dr. Babajide Martins, gave the warning during the commencement of the state’s Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month.
Martins explained that although Nigerian law does not recognise marital rape, Lagos State law criminalises sexual assault by penetration, which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
He urged women facing domestic or sexual violence to report such cases to the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency for appropriate legal action.
