The Federation of International Women Lawyers (FIDA) in Rivers State has decried the alarming rate at which minors have been targeted by rapists in the state.
Chairperson of the Association, Ngozi Egosepe who disclosed this to news correspondents in Port Harcourt yesterday, said rape cases in the state so far, have risen to 70 percent. This is as the state and the country at large continues to record rape cases almost on a daily basis.
Ngozi noted that it is no longer the issue of teenagers and adults being raped but minors between the ages of three to ten years. She urged families of the victims to speak up and report rape incidents to relevant authorities.
The chairperson equally stated that as soon as a rape incident is reported to them, they immediately report to the police and commence medical treatment on the victim. She called on relevant authorities not to treat rape incidents with kid gloves as it is a menace that needs to be stopped.
