The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration in a statement issued on Monday, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. The decision is in line with the ongoing seven-day national mourning period declared by the President to honour Buhari’s passing.
According to the Minister, the holiday is intended as a mark of respect for the late leader’s dedicated service to the nation, his role in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, and the legacy he left behind in governance and national development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
He also urged citizens to observe the day by promoting peace, unity, and patriotism, in line with the late President’s vision for a prosperous Nigeria.
As previously announced, national flags are flying at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13.
The Federal Government extended its condolences to the late President’s family, the government and people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
The statement was signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary, Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB).
