The Federal Government is weighing a proposal that would permit journalists to accompany military personnel on selected operations as part of efforts to strengthen security reporting and provide citizens with a clearer understanding of ongoing counterinsurgency and internal security activities.
The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, revealed the initiative on Thursday during the National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Abuja.
Speaking through his Special Adviser, Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole, Musa said the proposed arrangement is aimed at deepening cooperation between the media and security agencies while encouraging greater transparency in military operations.
According to him, the media remains a critical partner in influencing public understanding of security matters and national stability, stressing that contemporary security challenges are no longer confined to the battlefield alone.
He added that modern warfare is increasingly driven by information and public narratives, making the media an essential component of Nigeria’s broader security framework.
