The Federal Government has announced plans to begin the voluntary repatriation of Nigerians residing in South Africa following a wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, disclosed that the move comes on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
She explained that the government is making arrangements to provide evacuation flights for Nigerians who are willing to return home, assuring that the safety and welfare of citizens abroad remain a top priority.
The minister added that the decision underscores the government’s commitment to protecting Nigerians in the diaspora amid rising concerns over their security in the former apartheid nation.
