The newly appointed Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Ayo Fayose, has attributed Nigeria’s rising population to the lack of reliable electricity supply in the country.
Fayose made the remark at the weekend after assuming office as Chairman of the agency.
He said inadequate electricity supply forces many Nigerians to stay indoors and go to bed early, leaving them with limited recreational options at night.
According to him, improving electricity supply would encourage nightlife and provide people with alternative activities beyond staying at home.
Fayose said, “When you don’t address the issue of electricity, by 7 o’clock it gets dark, and people start engaging with their wives, so the population doubles.
“The simple problem is that, because there is no electricity, people go to bed early. Their minds are already prepared for it. If this is the only option available, they simply stay at home. But if we address the electricity problem, there will be nightlife,” he said.
