Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has said winning UEFA Euro 2016 with Portugal holds the same significance for him as lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy.
Ronaldo made the remarks after Portugal’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in Monday’s Round of 16 clash in Arlington, Texas. The match was decided by a stoppage-time goal from Mikel Merino, bringing an end to what Ronaldo acknowledged was his sixth and final World Cup campaign.
Speaking after the game, the Portuguese captain said his 2016 European Championship success would always remain one of the greatest achievements of his career despite never winning the World Cup.
“I’ve won Euro 2016 and for me it has the same dimension as the World Cup. That remains forever. Tomorrow is a new day, and we go,” Ronaldo said.
