TEXT: LUKE 6:20-38
MEMORY VERSE: “Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek, offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also” (Luke 6:28-29 KJV).
From the teachings of the four gospels, we have come to understand one truth. The whole essence is to restore fallen man, and to re-qualify us to be called sons of God. But we need to receive both the message and the teacher (John 1:12). There is always great joy and happiness in the heart, which results from sincere application of these teachings.
In our text today, we are taught some Christian principles that lead to edification, if we apply them to our life. we are taught to remove pride and arrogance. We are counselled to show true repentance for our sins and seek God’s forgiveness and blessings; and desire to know and understand His word. We are encouraged to endure when we are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for God shall see us as His true sons and daughters; for it evidence that we do not walk in darkness through living sinful life but that we walk in light by holy and righteous living and conduct (1 Peter 3:14; 4:4, 16).
In our text, our Lord condemned the pursuit of materialism, while seeking holiness, righteousness, and the love and knowledge of God and His ways are neglected. Those who ignore the poor are also condemned. People who such things are called to repent or face God’s judgement and wrath. They are counselled to imitate Jesus in His profound show of mercies and compassion to us, and incomprehensible to us and the Father. We should live in peace with everyone, and not judge or condemn one another; and to forgive one another; and to show mercy, even to known enemies (vs. 37-38 ()
- Persecution, trials, and temptations are part of experiences in Christian faith.
- Lord Jesus, please grant me the grace of tolerance.
