ESOCS Devotional 6 December
TEXT: PROVERBS 5:15-23 KJV
MEMORY VERSE: “For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: but her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.” Proverbs 5:3-4 KJV
Adultery is not only a spiritual offence against God, it is also a social problem that has continued to ravage society (Prov. 2:16-19; 5:3-11; 9:13-18). The guard against adultery in a society is the fidelity of mothers and fathers who have taught their children by their examples. The instructions of the parents should be bound to the hearts of the children (Deut. 6:6-7). In our text today (vs. 15-23), we note such figurative statements as : “Drink water out of your cistern”, “your fountain dispersed”, “loving deer and pleasant doe”. These are all idiomatic statements to the effect that one should stay at home and receive emotional nourishment from his own wife (SS. 4:12-15).
Finding contentment in one’s own marriage is the best guarantee against sexual promiscuity. Adultery is one of the major and primary sins that would destroy the family structure of society. God’s original plan for marriage was one man-one-woman, for life (Matt. 19:3-8). Monogamous relationships were the principles by which God intended that the world be populated. Polygamy was never in the plan of God. Though God, for reasons only known to Him as God, allowed such in the lives of some persons, such people paid dearly for their polygamous relationships.
For those who may be tempted to commit adultery, let such be reminded that the eyes of the Lord are everywhere, and that God knows even the innermost thought of the heart. Stay away from adultery and live.
