TEXT: GENESIS 6:5-22

MEMORY VERSE: “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually”.  Genesis 6:5

The earth was no longer the perfect paradise that God had intended. It was frightening to see how quickly all of humanity forgot about God. Humanity reached the point of no return. Degradation became the norm of social behaviour; and thus, society was beyond repentance and in a state of self-destruction. Wickedness found a permanent abode in man’s heart; he became evil against God’s standard. The people’s sin grieved God’s heart and He repented that He created man (v 6).

Wickedness still thrives in man’s heart today. If not, how do we explain the spate of killings in our world today, perversion of justice, poverty, social imbalance, etc.? God hates sin. His eyes are too pure to behold sin (Habakkuk 1:13). Our sins break His heart as much as sin did in Noah’s day. Sin has consequence – death (Romans 6:23).

God repented that He created man. Does this mean He regretted creating humanity? Was He admitting He made a mistake? No, God does not change His mind (1 Samuel 15:29). Instead, He was expressing sorrow for what the people had done to themselves, as a parent may over a rebellious child. He was sorry that the people chose sin and death instead of a relationship with Him.

Let us not grieve God. Our Cherubim and Seraphim hymn number 30 says it all – Will you grieve your God and die?

  • Refrain from anything that is capable of making you grieve God.
  • May the Holy Spirit direct us aright, in Jesus name.
