TEXT: LEVITICUS 23:1-22
MEMORY VERSE: “When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop. Leave it for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I, the Lord, am your God.” Leviticus 23:22 NLT
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted place ”
The harvest season is such that is very special and usually greeted with high expectations. This definitely flows from the reflection on the sowing and planting season processes, the investment made, together with the sacrifices. Thus, there is a passionate drive anticipatory of harvest.
To the glory of God, while we celebrate the bountiful harvest in all fields of endeavours, it is important to refresh our minds on God’s harvesting principle, as communicated in our text. The import of this principle is that you do not completely comb the harvest field of all that was harvested. Some of the grains that fell at the edge should be allowed to remain for the less privileged. This age long principle was what Ruth leveraged on to get food for both her and her mother-in-law, Naomi having just returned to town (Ruth 2). Boaz was so considerate during the harvest that he gave further instructions to his reapers:“…Boaz commanded his young men, saying,Let her glean even among the sheaves, and reproach her not: And let fall also some of the handful of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not” (Ruth 2:15-16 KJV).
Beloved, as God blesses you in your endeavors of life, how much do you consider the less privileged. While you rejoice over the great harvest, do you think of the poor? How often do you deliberately give alms and support to the less privilege without them coming to prostrate for you simply because they need favour?
The Lord commands that out of your harvest, let the poor rejoice; let the foreigner go home smiling; let the less privilege thank God for you. Surely, it is a secret to sustaining the harvest.
- Always learn to give quality alms to the less privilege
- Let someone come out of poverty by the impact of your harvest.
- Father, thank you for the great harvest you are bringing our way, grant us the grace to consider the poor and needy in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
