ESOCS Devotional 31 December
TEXT: ECCLESIASTES 9:1-10
MEMORY VERSE: “Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to the grave, there will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.” Ecclesiastes 9:10 KJV
As if writing from the perspective of worldly people, who have no hope beyond the grave, the writer portrays death as the inevitable end of all things in reference to the living. He therefore opines that such state of mind is the reason why many people are no more careful to do good, or to be good. In other words, people rather choose their own mad course, believing the grave is a leveller, and, beyond which nothing matters anymore.
In verses 7-10, the writer appears to encourage worldly oriented people to go ahead and eat their food, and drink their wine with a happy heart; wear fine clothes, with all amount of freedom. But, as if in utter contradiction, the same man of wisdom in Prov. 16:25 states, “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”
Believers should be conscious of the second death, which awaits all who walk or work contrary to God’s commandment here on earth (Rev. 21:8; Rev. 20:14). This is the eternal death of Daniel 12:2, Matt. 25:46, and Mark 9:43-48. This is the spiritual death, which definitely awaits all sinners outside the umbrella of Christ. (Luke 16:22-31).
As followers of Christ Jesus, let’s maintain the right course of walking with the Lord, in the light of His word, for as many as would receive Him, to them He would give power to become sons of God, even unto eternal life (John 5:29; John 11:23-26).
