TEXT: MATTHEW 13: 44-58
MEMORY VERSE: “For the merchandize of it is better than the merchandize of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her” (Proverbs 3: 14-15 KJV).
An astute Bible Scholar has described the word of salvation as the wisdom of the ancient, yet as fresh as the morning dew, which also points to the future, and even leading unto eternity. In our text today, Jesus describes the word of the kingdom as a treasure hidden in a field, which a wise man found, and in all wisdom went and sold all that he has, and invested in the kingdom business (vs. 44-46).
It follows therefore that, as one would seek a hidden treasure of this world that he knew existed, so one must advisably and eagerly seek that God’s kingdom should reign in his heart, as it is in heaven (Matt. 6:10). One need necessarily be willing to make every possible sacrifice in order to acquire that which he has discovered in the Gospel of Christ – having also understood the cost of salvation (Luke 14:26-33). The real cost of salvation is two-fold: the first is that it cost the blood of the Son of God to achieve it for us; and this is beyond all human knowledge. He was executed in our place, setting us free and removing our guilt. Secondly, on our part, receiving Christ as Saviour has its high cost too. Having been declared righteous by God, we must necessarily become transformed people, sanctified – spirit, soul and body (1 Thess. 5:23). The real cost is therefore complete surrender to God and His will, just as Christ was completely submissive to the Father’s will, even unto death (Rom. 1:5; 1 Cor. 7:19). The most foolish thing a man can do is to trade his chances of inheriting eternal life for a lifetime of worldly pleasures and riotous living (Prov. 9:19-20).
- Assess you place in Christ now and score yourself.
- Lord, I am no not worthy to be called your own but forgive and rebuild me
