TEXT: MARK 1:1-20
MEMORY VERSE: “And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.” Mark 1:17 KJV
Many of us are familiar with this song, which is almost a nursery rhyme: “I will make you fishers of men if you follow me.” Discipleship entails both the imitation of and the servitude to the master in “full-time apprenticeship.” Jesus calls Simon and Andrew to be with him and learn not only to understand Christ’s teaching but also to imitate and replicate them.
Jesus calls his disciples (Christians) to sacrifice their lifestyle and their lives to change the world rather than run a business, and in return, many lives would be changed forever.
Following Jesus is a much more excellent and honourable employment, to save men and the souls of men by plundering hell and populating heaven with the good news of repentance. I our verse today, we read what God has prepare us to do. The moment we become a new creation by accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, being a Christian does not just stop there. When Jesus called the two sets of brothers, they immediately answered and followed Christ.
Thus, if we are truly following Christ, it means that we should become like his disciples. We are called for some greater purpose, not just to secure our salvation in Christ, but also become fishers of men. We were once ‘fish in the oceans’ who did not know Christ, but Christ has manifested and reached out to us through the lives of other Christians. Now we also are called to do the same.
- Have you taken the decision to answer the call?
- Oh Lord, fill me with the grace and unction to witness for you, in Jesus’ name. Amen
