TEXT: PROVERBS 2: 1 – 22
MEMORY VERSE: “If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.” (Proverbs 2:4-5 KJV).
Wisdom is the quality of having experience, knowledge, and of good judgment. It is “skill for living”, but living God’s way instead of our own way. Once again, the Father–figure in Proverbs is teaching his son (who we can all put ourselves in the place of) how to get wisdom. He tells him four ways to get wisdom (not four different ways). We are all encouraged to do them all if we want to get wisdom.
So, what are the four ways to get wisdom? Believing in God’s Word (v 1), memorizing His Word (v 1), accepting God’s Word (v 2), and asking God for wisdom through prayer (vv. 3 – 4). King Solomon, the wisest man ever lived asked for wisdom from God (2 Chronicles 1:9–10) to be able to judge rightly and fairly. Wisdom is the principal thing …”, remember, the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom; therefore, as children of God, we must ask God for wisdom through prayer and believe in His word too.
What are the benefits of wisdom? What makes it worth doing all those things? Some of the benefits of wisdom are knowing God (vv. 5–6), protection from mistakes in this life (vv. 7–19), and an eternal home with God in the life to come (vv. 20–22). Hebrews says that the heroes of our faith “were longing for a better country—a heavenly one” (Heb. 11:16). If that’s you, if you’re longing for a better home, pursue wisdom. Seek God by believing His word, memorizing it, accepting it, and prayer.
Wisdom is a gift, but it’s a gift we help work for. Knowing God is a gift, spending eternity with Him is a gift, His protection is a gift, but it’s a gift we seek by seeking wisdom. Seek wisdom and find your forever home with God.
- How do you know you get the wisdom of God?
- Lord God, fill me with your wisdom and help me to cherish it.
