TEXT: JOHN 14:12 – 31
MEMORY VERSE: “And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever” (John 14: 16 KJV).
Jesus would soon leave His disciples – His ascension to heaven, but He would [still] remain with them. But how would this be? The Comforter, the Spirit of God Himself, would come after Jesus was gone. This happened at Pentecost (Acts 2). He would care, teach, and guide the disciples. The word “Comforter” means comfort and counsel. It could also mean Advocate, Encourager, or Counsellor. The Holy Spirit is the presence of God within all believers, helping us to live as God wants, and building Christ’s church on earth. He is a powerful person on our side, working for, and with us. We should know that the Holy Spirit has been active among His people from creation (Ezekiel 39:29); but after Pentecost, He came to dwell in all believers (Acts 2). The outpouring of the Holy Spirit was prophesied by Joel (Joel 2:28,29).
For many (believers) who do not know the activities of the Holy Spirit, the following chapters below (in the book of John) will help us out. He will never leave us (14:16); the world at large cannot recognize Him (14:17); He lives with us and in us (14:17); He teaches us (14:26); He reminds us of Jesus’ words (14:26); He convinces us of sin, shows us God’s righteousness, and announces God’s judgment on evil (16:8). He guides us in truth and gives us insight into future events, does not speak of Himself but what He hears from God (16:13); He glorifies Christ (16:14). He hears from God and transmits to us (16:14).
The Holy Spirit guides us into a new way of life in Christ. As we study the Bible, pray, teach, and preach the word of God, and counsel, etc., we can trust Him to plant the truth in our mind, convince us of God’s will, and remind us when we stray. Now, we know better. To God be the glory.
- Do you have challenges knowing the work of the Holy Spirit in your life as a believer?
