TEXT: LUKE 8:16-39
MEMORY VERSE: “The disciples went and woke Him, saying, ‘Master, we’re going to drown.’ He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided and all was calm.” Luke 8:24 NIV
Jesus is by all standards the Light of the world. His extreme dazzling brightness outshines every work of darkness and even the standard laws of nature. In the same vein, those who live in Christ, and who also are inhabited by the Spirit of Christ, should also serve as this world’s light by extension.
Moreover, no secret thing or dark things of the kingdom of darkness can be hidden from the light. Hence, the all-knowing capacity or quality of Jesus Christ as light enabled Him to know in advance of the impending destructive storm. He simply used it as an opportunity to teach His disciples the need to always depend on His Divine power to save, in all circumstances. In likewise manner, every storm of life (be it demonic attacks, witchcraft, or accidental death) should move us (believers) to depend on God, without wavering.
Jesus was disappointed with their lack of faith. This was manifested in their fear of death. But, since they knew they were in the presence of the One who had already severally controlled the elements, as well as healed all manners of sicknesses, their fear could be viewed as baseless and embarrassing to the Master. They needed to put their trust in Him, and in so doing, not be afraid of any crisis life may bring – even death. The miracle manifested the extent to which Jesus had control over all things.
Down the line in our text, Saint Luke explains how the legion-possessed demoniac, who was well known in the community, was healed by the command of Jesus as the true Light that enlightens every man who comes into the world. He shines everywhere, even in the kingdom of darkness. Moreover, darkness does not have the capacity to comprehend His extra dazzling brightness. During His earthly ministry, He manifested His light over every work of darkness. He raised the dead, and cleansed the lepers. He even conquered death. What a great light, amidst the great darkness of this sinful world
- Jesus, the Light of the world outshines every crisis and works of darkness. Any doubt about that?
- Jesus, the Great Light; grant me the grace to shine as you do.
