TEXT: JOHN 9: 1 – 12
MEMORY VERSE: “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day; the night cometh, when no man can work.” John 9: 4 KJV
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted lace ”
Jesus said, “I must work the works of him that sent me.…” The word “sent” is from the word pempo, which means to send as a messenger or to send on a specific mission. This means that Jesus was no haphazard messenger. He was purposely sent by the Father for a specific reason, and He was accountable for how He performed His mission. This part of the verse, then, actually carries this idea: “I was sent specifically for this mission, and I will answer to the One who sent me for how I carry out this assignment.” Jesus Christ knew that the opportunity before Him was limited. This is true of most opportunities God places before us. If we delay or hesitate too long, the opportunities God gives us will pass us by. It is urgent that we — like Jesus — make the decision to esteem every God-given opportunity as a special gift that cannot be wastefully squandered. Time is a precious gift, and opportunities for the Kingdom are open doors provided by God Himself. Therefore, if God has given you a space of time when you can freely work without hindrance, you need to embrace it as a God- given gift, and fervently seek to fulfill what He has called you to do.
The work you do in the day time of your life is what you eat of in the night in life. When you fail to plant your seedlings in the planting season, never expect to harvest or reap anything in the harvesting season. Galatians 6:7 says, “Whatever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” In other words, any work you do today, whether spiritually or physically, is what you will definitely live on tomorrow. Work while it is day because every one of us is on a mission on earth. Therefore, whatever you are doing here on earth should be done rightly and without delay. Surely, a day will come when you will stand before God to give account on how you spend your life on earth. A day of reckoning will come when God will call on you, to assess your faithfulness in Him, and on how you did your work, in order for Him to reward you.
Child of God, when Jesus said, “I must do the work of him that sent me while it is day, the night cometh when no man can work”, He was simply inferring that you must be working for God faithfully with the totality of your heart. God has sent you to be wining souls for Him through evangelism, so that hell can be depopulated for Heaven to be populated. He has sent you to set the captives free and show love to one another. Serve God with all your heart, spirit, soul and body, especially in the days of your youth and the Lord will reward you bountifully.
- What are you doing with your time? Are you dedicating it to the service of God?
- Father, teach me to work while it is still day, in Jesus name.
