TEXT: JOHN 14:2-31
MEMORY VERSE: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”John 14: 6 KJV
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted lace ”
Man today is basically searching for three things: some direction (the way), something that is real (the truth), and something that will last forever (life).
When we have a long trip ahead of us, we want to turn on our GPS and get an idea of how long it will take and the roads we will travel on to get there. We determine the best, fastest routes and then start our journey. Thomas was looking for the same kind of information. However, Jesus makes it clear that they (or we) won’t know the defined way we are supposed to travel in life. We are instead tasked with simply knowing and trusting in Jesus daily, and walking in faith that HE is the WAY. When we abide in Him, we will not know a defined course; but we can rest in the comfort of faith – that He will lead us exactly where we need to go, as we walk Him, and in Him. He said that He has gone to prepare a place for us (v 2). This suggests that after we have completed the journey of this life, we will find ourselves in a place of rest where the Father is (v 3).
Jesus can testify to the truth and teach the truth because He Himself is that truth. In Him, there is nothing false, nothing misleading, and nothing fake or uncertain (v 6). Each of us is capable of knowing truth; but none of us can claim to actually be truth. There are too many things we don’t know, and too many things we get wrong throughout our lives. Yet, Jesus claims to be truth, and in doing so claims to be one with God (vs 9-10). When we seek to figure out what is the truth and what is a lie, we can measure it against the words of Jesus, who Himself is the truth.
This life is not our ultimate goal and does not encompass the entirety of who we are. Jesus is teaching us that what we are to really be concerned with is not this life, but with eternal life. When Jesus referred to Himself as the way, the truth, and the life, He was giving us a better way to live our lives, a life lived through Him. He was showing us that through following Him daily in faith, He will lead us to a better, richer, more meaningful life than we could ever find on our own.
Some of the benefits we enjoy when we accept Jesus as the way, truth and life to the Father include but not limited to: We will be able to do the works that He did and greater works (v 12). We will also receive whatsoever we have asked in His name (vs 13–14), and it will show that we love Him since we obey His commandments (vs 15, 21, 24 & 24). We will also enjoy peace and receive the Holy Spirit (vs 27 & 16–18).
Don’t look to the world for the answers you seek. Turn to Him while He may be found. Whatever it takes, turn to God while you still have an opportunity. We are living in the last days. You don’t want to miss the way, the truth, and the life.
- Everything that you are looking for can be found in him.
- Lord, help me to be contented with having you
