TEXT: 1 KINGS 1:5-13
MEMORY VERSE: “Now therefore come let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon” (1 Kings 1:12 KJV).
There are positions that God has destined for certain persons. No enemy or detractor can change it. Adonija manoeuvred many people in the effort to become king. But Solomon was destined by God to reign over Israel, as David’s heir to the throne.
God is the one who decides what will be, and on whom He would bestow honour. Adonija was self-serving. He did not enquire to know the will of God. He had the attitude of undue self-esteem; and in the end, he disgraced himself: “Then Adonijah … exalted himself saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him ….” (vv. 5 & 6).But the Bible warns: “Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves” (Rom. 12:3). Self-exaltation and pride lead people into self-destructive errors.
As we make our plans for the future, let us remember to pray for God’s will in our life and endeavours. We should always avoid presumptions – it is a grievous sin in God’s sight. Great people in Bible times did not manoeuvre anyone or anything to get to prominence. Abraham, Moses, David, Esther, Deborah, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshack, Abednego, and many others became great according to God’s will. God’s will in our life is the best for us; it supersedes our plans and schemes.
Those who are God’s elect do not hustle to ascend their thrones. They don’t manoeuvre, lobby or give bribes to get to the top. God works out everything for them. This was the case with Solomon. The king, the prophet, the priest, and his mother championed his cause. They were instruments in God’s hands. Let us wait on God. He will arrange His instruments for our benefit, and soon too.
- God will intervene to make you become great in life; just wait on Him.
- Father, please speak for me and raise men of worth to champion my cause.
