ESOCS Devotional 20 July 2026 – Your Sorrow Will Turn to Joy

MEMORY VERSE: “Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.” – John 13:16 (NIV)

TEXT: JOHN13:12-20

So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? ¹³ You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. ¹⁴ If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. ¹⁵ For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. ¹⁶ Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. ¹⁷ If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

¹⁸ “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’ ¹⁹ Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. ²⁰ Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

After washing His disciples’ feet, Jesus reminded them that if He, their Lord and Teacher, humbled Himself to serve, they must do the same. This statement, “no servant is greater than his master,” challenges every believer to embrace humility. We often want leadership without servanthood, honour without sacrifice. Yet Jesus redefined greatness through service (Mark 10:43–45). If He stooped to serve, we are not above doing the same.

True discipleship means following not only Jesus’ words but also His example. Philippians 2:5–7 tells us that Jesus “made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant.” As His followers, we’re called to mirror this heart, choosing humility over status, love over position, and service over self-interest. This doesn’t make us less valuable, but more like Christ. Serving others, even in unnoticed ways, is a reflection of divine character.

Jesus taught that the blessing is not just in knowing these things, but in doing them (John 13:17). Our obedience in humble service honours God and transforms us. The servant isn’t greater than the Master, but when we serve like Him, we reflect His greatness to the world.

• Lord Jesus, you humbled yourself to serve others.

• Make me a true servant who reflects your love. Amen.
