ESOCS Devotional 19 June 2024 – Glory in God
MEMORY VERSE: “But let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. ‘For in these I delight,’ says the Lord.” Jeremiah 9:24 NKJV
TEXT: JEREMIAH 9:23-24
Thus says the Lord:
“Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom,
Let not the mighty man glory in his might,
Nor let the rich man glory in his riches;
24 But let him who glories glory in this,
That he understands and knows Me,
That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth.
For in these I delight,” says the Lord.

Man will always be given to praise or boasting. There are basically three areas of man’s life through which or in which man boast of himself. Man (both genders) will always take pride in his wisdom; this includes his intellectual pursuits and exploits. He takes pride in his power and the extent of its influence; and in his riches and wealth. Any man who possesses these three areas sees himself as great.
However, God is here telling us that He is the only authentic reason why we should glory. Our glorying in Him shows forth virtues. But glorying in ourselves is selfish and produces frictions. In our glorying, we want to show who is greater and better. An unhealthy competition becomes the order of the day.
Our glorying in God is founded on two pillars and expressed in three virtues as seen in the bible portion above. The pillars are that we understand and know Him. No wonder then, David told his son Solomon that he should know the God of the His father (1 Chronicles 28:9). Knowing and understanding God is one of the best things that can happen to any man. This is because it produces virtues in the persons. The virtues are lovingkindness, judgement and righteousness. These are the characteristics with which God relates with us on earth; they are the virtues with which God expects us to represent him and relate with one another on the earth.
There is only one way to know and understand God now. Jesus Christ speaking in John 14:6 said, “I am is the Way!” If you must understand and know God, you must come to Jesus Christ and receive Him as your Lord and Saviour. He died on the Cross for your sin. Also, anyone that sees Jesus has seen the Father God and anyone that understands Jesus Christ has understood the Father. From today, let your glorying be in God of heaven and earth and He will appreciate that you know the True God and that He is your substance of confidence on earth, and not your wisdom, power or riches!
- Submit to Christ, learn of Him and you will understand and know God.
- Father, thank you for Jesus Christ and revealing yourself in Him. Grant me the grace to learn more of Him, in Jesus Name Amen.
