ESOCS Devotional 18 July 2026 – Part With Me

MEMORY VERSE: “Peter said to Him, ‘You shall never wash my feet!’ Jesus answered him, ‘If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.’” John 13:8 NIV

TEXT: JOHN 13:1-11

Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

2 And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?”

7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.”

8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!”

Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”

9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”

When Jesus stooped to wash His disciples’ feet, He demonstrated humility, love, and servant leadership. But Peter resisted. It seemed improper for the Master to serve the servant. Yet Jesus’ response was striking: unless Peter submitted to His cleansing, he could not share in Christ’s life. This washing symbolized more than clean feet, it pointed to the spiritual cleansing every believer needs. As Titus 3:5 explains, we are saved “through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,” not by our own efforts.

True fellowship with Jesus requires humility. Like Peter, we may resist Christ’s work in our hearts, out of pride, shame, or self-reliance. But unless we allow Him to cleanse us daily, we remain spiritually distant. The psalmist cried, “Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow” (Psalm 51:7), acknowledging that only God can purify the heart. We must continually surrender to this inner washing, drawing near with a clean conscience, as Hebrews 10:22 urges: “Let us draw near… having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience.”

Jesus still says to us today: “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” Will you let Him wash you?

Reflections

  • Is there an area of your life you’re resisting Jesus’ cleansing?
  • Is pride or guilt keeping you from deeper fellowship with Him?

Action Step

In prayer, humbly ask Jesus to reveal and cleanse any area of your heart that resists Him. Then take a step of obedience today in that area.

Prayer

  • Lord Jesus, I surrender my pride and my resistance.
  • Wash me and make me clean.
  • Help me walk closely with You, in humility and obedience. Amen.
