ESOCS Devotional 16 August 2023 – Be Full of Light
MEMORY VERSE: ““God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all.” 1 JOHN 1:5
TEXT: LUKE 11:29-36 (KJV)
29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom; and now something greater than Solomon is here.32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and now something greater than Jonah is here.
33 “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy,[a] your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy,[b] your body also is full of darkness. 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

Light is defined as the electromagnetic radiation within the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum or wavelength between 380 to 750 mm which is visible or perceived by the human eye.
Light is the energy from the sun or fire and from electrical devices that allows you to see clearly. Light therefore is a source of illumination, whether a natural one (like the sun) or an artificial one (like the lamp, electric bulb, etc.). Importantly, it is the medium of illumination that makes sight visible. It is capable of causing a visual sensation.
It can be a noun, adjective or verb. Spiritually, light is the most universal and fundamental symbols. It is spiritual and divine. It is illumination and the divine. It is the source of goodness and the ultimate reality. The light of God is His holiness, righteousness and goodness, which is in contrast to the darkness of evil and sin. It is part of the essence of God. Following the importance of light of God, He created light on earth by speaking it into existence because chaos because reign in the darkness. The psalmist proclaimed it in chapter 27:1: “God is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear.”Also, in the gospel according to saint John Chapter 1:9: “He (Jesus Christ) was the true light which lightened every man that cometh into the world.” Another scripture clearly states that God is light: “And there shall be no light and no need of candle, neither light of the sun: for lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign forever.”
In the text above Jesus was explaining to the people who gathered to ask for sign like that of Jonah. When greater than Jonah or Solomon was with them rather than believing him who is the light of the world and be filled with such light to avoid darkness.
He is therefore challenging mankind to be filled with the knowledge of both, righteousness and love than ask for sign which they don’t understand.
In summary, Jesus Christ wants the children to be filled with the knowledge of God in so much that the glory of God which is perfect will lighten them and no darkness or evil shall come their way to hunt or harm them. In this way the God head, (The father, son and the Holy Spirit) will come upon us to give illumination that will activate our soul to be alive in Him. In this way we shall have no need of signs and wonders.
- To recognize the light, let it stream through us to lighten every situation.
- Pray that will illuminate so that you in return will illuminate your environment especially the ministry of our LORD and Saviour Jesus Christ.
