TEXT: PROVERBS 28:12-28
MEMORY VERSE: “He who gives to the poor will not lack, but he who hides his eyes will have many curses” (Proverbs 28:27 NKJV).
One of the principles in the word of God that guarantees continuous increase is the principles of giving. Our memory verse teaches that giving compassionately to the poor and needy around us leads to sustained abundance: will not lack. The reason is that such a giver makes himself God’s channel of blessings to others; and as God’s channel, there is usually a continuous inflow, for God is the source.
The act of giving is like seed sowing. God enacted a covenant in Genesis 8:22: “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease” (NKJV). If we key into the covenant, we would reap the benefits of its promise. It is an empowerment; a licence to prosperity; and a never-ending chain and cycle of financial and material advancement. It is something we should crave for and never relent. The Bible says, “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion …” (2 Cor. 9:10-11 NIV). Again, “He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward him for what he has done” (Prov. 19:17).
God is waiting for us to key into the covenant so that He would honour His promise of giving the increase. We learn here that giving is an easy way to prosper. So, let us adopt it as a life pattern. Let us have the understanding that the implication is that each we give or help the poor and needy, we make investment for our benefit in God’s enterprise. When we give, let us give bountifully so that we would also reap bountifully; for if give sparingly, we would not be given much (2 Cor. 9:6). This is a true saying that has practical application. Let us give to the poor that God may be indebted to us. It is a wise thing to do; and a wise way to invest.
- Make a plan to give things regularly to those in need.
- Lord, teach me to be faithful in giving to you.
