ESOCS Devotional 14 August 2023 – The Finger of God
MEMORY VERSE: “Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, just as the Lord had said.” Exodus 8:19 NKJV
TEXT: EXODUS 8:6-8 (KJV)
So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. 7 And the magicians did so with their enchantments, and brought up frogs on the land of Egypt.
8 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, “Entreat the Lord that He may take away the frogs from me and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may sacrifice to the Lord.”

The phrase the finger of God is found four times in the Bible, three times in the Old Testament and once in the New Testament. (Ex. 8:19; Psalm 8:13; Luke 11:20; John 8:6-8). The finger of God gives us a glimpse into the immensity of all that God is and does. Metaphorically speaking it refers to the amount of power, mercy, judgement and honour God has in His own little finger.
Though God is a spirit, he has broken into our mortal existence in ways we can see and hear so that we get to know him closely by recognizing his existence and reciprocate his love by fearing him and keeping his commandment.
The psalmist in trying to make us understand God said, “when I behold the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have made”, what is man that their mindful by him or the son of man that thou visit him (psalm 8:3-4). He did not mention the creatures in the sea, on land, desert places, forest, the birds and every living thing both micro and microscopic ones or physical and spiritual all by his power.
His finger can in a moment bring the whole creation into total destruction but rather he desires to bring heaven to earth and welcome us into his holy and glorious presence forever. As Christians we are children of the highest God and so should have faith, confidence in Gods power. His power supersets every other in heaven and the universe as a whole.
It is therefore an abomination for anyone to think of comparing the authority or power of God to any creature Be it demon, principality, impostor gods or goddess, i.e., creatures that have deceived man to worship.
God has rather given those that believe in the LORD Jesus Christ the authority to cast in them and because they are evil that will never do any man good but courses continuous misery on Earth upon human timid.
The finger of God matched Israel out of Egypt perished under the command of pharaoh. How about the Medianites when Gideon engaged them in war while three hundred Israel soldiers stood to watch Medianites soldier as the dust of the earth destroy themselves by their sword and many others. It therefore points to the facts that any one that has good relationship with God has right to the finger or power of God with this tremendous power. You can silence the kingdom of the devil to glorify the LORD GOD Almighty who is worthy to be glorified. Wicked activities of the kingdom of darkness.
- How do we develop the courage and faith that will allow the fire of God to flow through our finger to fulfill his will?
- Pray that every contrary spirit frustrating our efforts be consumed by the finger of God.
