TEXT: JOHN 6:52-59
MEMORY VERSE: “Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6: 54 KJV
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted lace ”
Eternal life is not just living forever. Everyone will live forever. The difference is where they will live. Eternal life is knowing Jesus and God the Father (John 17:3). It is a vital, living relationship with God through Christ Jesus. And this eternal life comes only by faith in God and the faith in Jesus Christ.
This is not speaking of physical eating of human flesh and drinking blood. Eating Jesus’ flesh and drinking His blood equals believing on Jesus. Verses 47 and 54 reveal that eating Jesus’ flesh and drinking His blood is done by simply believing on Him—hence eternal life.
The word “believeth” and the words “eateth my flesh” and “drinketh my blood” are used interchangeably. Therefore, eating His flesh and drinking His blood is believing on Him, which brings eternal life. “As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so, he that eateth me, even he shall live by me” (John 6:57).
When we put these verses above together, they tell us that life comes by “eating” Jesus—the bread of life and bread from heaven, which is referring to believing on Jesus. Again, the way we eat Jesus’ flesh and drink His blood is by believing on Him as our personal Lord and Savior.
Both life and everlasting life come by believing on the Lord Jesus!
We must receive Him by faith (John 1:12). We understand that we need physical food and drink; Jesus wants us to understand that we also need spiritual food and drink—and that is what His sacrifice provides.
- Are you growing your relationship with God through Christ?
- Father Lord, help me to hunger and thirst after your righteousness, in Jesus name.
