TEXT: I JOHN 5:1-15
MEMORY VERSE: “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” I John 5:11 KJV
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted lace ”
Life is promised “in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 1:1). Man is mortal. Each day brings us one day closer to the day of our death. Death is in the world as a consequence of sin (Romans 5:12). All who sin, deserve to die (Romans 6:23). Do you want to live forever with the Lord? Although we deserve to die, we can receive eternal life as a gift of grace from God (1 John 5:11; Romans 6: 23; 3:23-24). This eternal life is ‘in Christ’ because it is ‘in Christ’ that we are redeemed, that we are justified by the grace of God. There is no salvation outside of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17-19, 21).
When we believe that Jesus is the Christ, we become born of God and are children of God as a result of our obedience to His word (I John 5:1-2). We also become overcomers by our faith in Him (I John 5:3–4). We have confidence in Him that whatsoever we ask according to His will, He will hear us (I John 5:14-15).
Thus, if we want to inherit eternal life, we must be in Christ. How do we get into Christ? On the basis of our faith that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died for our sins and rose the third day, and that we are baptized into Christ. Jesus said we must be born of water and the Spirit to enter the kingdom of God (John 3:5). He also said, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mark 16:16). Through baptism we also take part in His resurrection (Romans 6:3–4; Galatians 3:27).
If you have not been baptized into Christ, do not wait a day longer! If you believe that Jesus is the Son of God, if you are sorry for your sins and are willing to confess your faith, then, on the basis of that faith, repentance and confession, you can be baptized into Christ and in Him you will have eternal life.
- Have you been baptized into Christ? Are you enjoying the newness of life in Him?
- Lord Jesus, I come to you today, baptize me in you and give me eternal life.
