TEXT: MATTHEW 6:24-34
MEMORY VERSE: “There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give, me to drink (for his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat). Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, “How is it that thou being a Jew askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans” John 4:7-9 KJV
While reading our text and waiting for the Lord’s inspiration, a television programme, “Your View”, was on. The issue of a woman and her two beautiful daughters, who were abandoned by her husband because of their “blue eyes” was being aired. Calls came in, all condemning the discriminating attitude of the husband/father. Before the end of the programme, a text message from the first lady of Kwara State came in. She volunteered to come to the aid of the woman and her children. The women anchoring the programme on TV visibly screamed for joy.
How would the man who abandoned them feel, seeing or knowing the change in their lives? Our text says that the woman of Samaria was making discriminating arguments with Christ (v 9). The response of Christ (v 10) made the story of Rebekah’s response to Abraham’s servant request for a drink at the well come to mind (Gen. 24:11-26).
Study the two women’s contrasting responses. One discriminated and argued while the other, without argument/discrimination, responded positively. Rebekah instantly got what girls of her time prayed for, marriage (blessing) while the woman of Samaria (in our text) was still struggling to get a husband (blessing). Most people still miss blessings that come to them in disguise today because of discrimination (Matt. 25:35-46). Christ’s response to the woman of Samaria in our text (v 10) should guide our behaviour today. Don’t ever discriminate against anyone.
