ESOCS Devotional 11 June 2026 – The Quest For Signs
MEMORY VERSE: “They said therefore unto him, what sign showest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? What dost thou work? John 6:30 KJV
TEXT: JOHN 6:30-40
Therefore they said to Him, “What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
32 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”
35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. 40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

In our local parlance, it is said that ‘seeing is believing’. Hence, many persons run after signs in our generation today. People move from one church to another, ministry to another, Prophet to another, Pastor to another, all in search of signs. Unfortunately, the false prophets and pastors have perfected the act of false signs, miracles, and wonders such one can hardly discern what is real or false.
Our text reveals that the crowd of persons that boarded a ship on their own accord to meet with Jesus after the previous day’s encounter asked Jesus for a sign in order for them to believe Him. My worry is that these persons were part of the five thousand (5,000) men besides women and children that were fed with five loaves and two fishes the other day; that was not enough sign for them. It therefore shows that there is no limit to the quest for signs for them. Hence, discrediting the statement that ‘seeing is believing’ and upholding the Christian teaching that “Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God” (Rom. 10:17).
Interestingly, while the people requested for a sign, Jesus pointed Himself to them. Implying, ‘I am the sign you seek.’ Beloved, there is no other sign you need other than the personality of Jesus. Whatever Jesus cannot do, can never be done by anyone. Everything you seek is inside of Jesus. Life is in Him, health is in Him, deliverance is in Him, favour and prosperity are in Him, breakthrough is in Him, marriage is in Him, power, and every other good thing are in Him. Stop jumping from pillar to post in your quest for signs. Be established in Jesus and He will meet you at every point of your need.
Reflections
- Be planted in Jesus and in the Church, beware of fake prophets.
Prayer
- Father, thank you for being the sign that I seek. Deliver me from every distraction of life so that I can focus on you alone, in Jesus name. Amen.
