TEXT: EXODUS 2O:1-17
MEMORY VERSE: “And Moses said unto the people, fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that His fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not” (Exodus 20:20 KJV).
The Ten Commandments was designed by God to lead the Israelites to a life of practical holiness through the worship of the only true God. It is the foundation of all other laws in the New Testament.
Some people today believe that the Ten Commandments was for the Moses’ Israelites; and so, do not have relevance again with the coming of Jesus Christ. This is not true. Jesus rightly said that He did not come to abolish the law and the prophets but to harmonize and fulfil them (Matthew 5:17).
Let us see few examples. The Ten Commandments says, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3); and Jesus said, “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve” (Matthew 4:10). Exodus 20:4 says, “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image….”; and Matthew 5:34 says, “Swear not at all…….” Again, in Exodus 20: 8, we read: “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.”
The lesson here is that the Law is still relevant till eternity. Jesus did not abolish it; rather, He gave a wider definition and meaning of each for better understanding and practice between man and man, and man and his God. The Law is the foundation of all other laws in the Bible. The Bible passages under further reading below show Jesus’ wider definition and explanation of the remaining six Commandments (Laws). We must not yield to false teaching (Colossians 2:8). The Ten Commandments and Jesus words are the same.
- Do you have challenges identifying false preachers and their false teachings?
- Ask God to open your eyes to the truth about the Bible to be able to identify false teachings.
