ESOCS Devotional 1 December
TEXT: Isaiah 60: 1-22 KJV
MEMORY VERSE: “And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” Isaiah 35:10 KJV
The first three verses of our text today envisions a time when people of all classes from many nations would come to worship the Messiah, an instance of this being when the three wise men from the east came to worship the baby Jesus, and to present gifts to Him (Matt. 2:11).
Verses 4-9 portray the future joyous homecoming for Israel after the captivity. From the bondage of captivity, they returned to the radiant Jerusalem, where all their sorrows were assuaged.
However, the symbolic and larger picture of this text is of the spiritual Zion, the New Jerusalem (The Church), to which all tribes of the earth would flow, to be taught of the ways of the Lord, that they will walk in His path (Isaiah 2:1-4). Here, Isaiah pictures a spiritual home-coming for all sinners and lovers of God (Luke 15:17-24).
In this New Jerusalem, divine wealth would replace poverty, and divine justice would be restored. Peace would administrate between the kingdom citizens; and righteousness would oversee all relations. As injustice ceases among citizens of God’s Kingdom, the defence of this city of God would be its salvation, while the strength of the city would be the praise of God.
In Matthew 5:3-11 (The Beatitudes), the Lord points at those Christian virtues that will guarantee blessedness or happiness in this Great Kingdom. Let us be guided.
