The Edo State House of Assembly has rejected former Speaker Blessing Agbebaku’s resignation and declared that he was impeached from office.
Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, resigned on August 17 amid reports of an impending impeachment.
Speaking during Monday’s plenary, Speaker Yekini Idiaye said an impeachment notice had already been endorsed by 17 of the 24 lawmakers before Agbebaku’s suspension.
He said the resignation was invalid because it was neither formally presented nor entered into the House records before the suspension.
The Assembly subsequently adopted a motion by Majority Leader Sunny Ojiezele, seconded by Ahmed Waziri, formally impeaching Agbebaku.
The former Speaker was also ordered to return all government property in his possession, with security agencies to be engaged if he fails to comply.
