The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced a state of emergency across the region, citing growing political instability and security concerns.
The declaration was made on Tuesday by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray during the 55th Session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level in Abuja.
Touray stressed that recent events highlight the urgent need for “serious introspection on the future of our democracy” and called for increased investment in regional security.
Addressing ministers, diplomats, and senior officials, he painted a grim picture of West Africa’s political climate, pointing to multiple incidents that indicate a rapidly deteriorating security environment. According to assessments presented at the session, ECOWAS member states now face an average “high risk” rating on a country-by-country basis.
