The Director-General of The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Julie Okah-Donli has made a shocking revelation that young boys in the country are currently more vulnerable to rape than girls as generally believed.
The DG made the revelation yesterday during a sensitisation campaign aimed at advocating severe punishment for rapists and perpetrators of other forms of sexual abuse in the country. She stated that she does not support death sentence for rapists because it will make them become brutal and will encourage jungle justice against persons who may be falsely accused.
Julie equally stated that during the lockdown, a lot of things where revealed to them concerning rape and sexual abuses. “People tend to focus more on girls being raped and forget that the reality is that the incident of rape for boys in Nigeria is currently on the increase,” she asserted.
The DG who lamented the rising case of rape in the country said, “Today, you see a lot of silly videos with people sharing and reposting, If you send it to me I will arrest you for child pornography, anyone who stigmatises against victims will be punished. We need to make people know that we are serious.”
Lately, there has been an increase in rape cases and other forms of sexual violence in the country, which has prompted stakeholders to advocate for stiffer punishment to end the menace.
