Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed that democracy remains the most effective system of government for Nigeria, describing it as the strongest path to national unity, sustainable development, and shared prosperity.
In a Democracy Day message issued on Thursday, June 11, Fubara said Nigeria’s diversity in ethnicity, religion, and culture makes democratic governance the most suitable framework for fostering inclusion and national cohesion.
The governor noted that June 12 represents more than a date in the country’s history, saying it symbolizes the sacrifices made by Nigerians in the struggle for freedom, justice, and representative government.
According to him, democracy has provided Nigerians with the opportunity to freely express their opinions, engage in constructive debates, and elect their leaders through the ballot box.
“Our democratic journey has not been without difficulties, but the resilience of our institutions and the determination of our people have kept the nation moving forward. The ability to express differing opinions, engage in constructive debate, and peacefully choose leaders through the ballot remains one of the greatest achievements of our nation,” he said.
Fubara stressed that Nigeria’s diversity should be regarded as a strength rather than a weakness, adding that democracy offers the opportunity to build consensus, strengthen national unity, and promote inclusive development.
He called on Nigerians to remain committed to democratic ideals and work collectively towards building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
