DCLM Daily Manna 9 October 2026: Reciprocal Generosity
KEY VERSE: “Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only” (Philippians 4:15).
TEXT: Philippians 4:14-18
Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction.
15 Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.
16 For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.
17 Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.
18 But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.

Anne Frank, the German-born Jewish diarist, who endured unbearable persecution during the Second World War, said: “No one has ever become poor by giving.” She was reiterating a principle backed by a divine balance that ensures a steady return stream of what is given back to the giver. Thus, the giver cannot run out of what they offer.
The truth in Anne’s observation reechoes the message of Apostle Paul’s prison letter to the Philippian brethren. The Philippians had benefited from the priceless riches of the gospel brought to them by Apostle Paul years ago. Beginning with Lydia, the purple dealer, many Philippians were saved from sin and ushered into a new life of spiritual prosperity. Now, they heard of their mentor’s needs as a missionary giving his all in the service of the Lord, as he did in Philippi. They repeatedly came to his aid when others did not. They did not forsake Paul in confinement in Rome, either. The apostle initiated this process of sacrificial giving, which left neither side impoverished.
The Philippians received uncommon apostolic commendation and benediction that should spur today’s believer to be liberal in supporting the Church for the propagation of the gospel of Christ. Doing the work of God is not a business venture that yields money. It can only be sustained when we embrace the spirit of giving faithfully and cheerfully.
With mounting pressure on the Church to reach more unsaved mankind before the return of the Son of God, there should be no hesitation on the part of members of the Body of Christ to give willingly for the release of more missionaries into the field. We also have to pray to be part of the mammoth throng moving into the harvest space with our family members, time and talents. We must not forsake our leaders, especially in their hour of need. That is the lesson from the Philippians. They reciprocated the generosity of their spiritual father.
THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: LUKE 17–19
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Truly, giving to promote the work of God will not make you poor.
