Daily Manna 27 December
MEMORY VERSE: “Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word” (PSALM 119:114).
READ: PSALM 119:113-120
113 I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love.
114 Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.
115 Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God.
116 Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.
117 Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.
118 Thou hast trodden down all them that err from thy statutes: for their deceit is falsehood.
119 Thou puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross: therefore I love thy testimonies.
120 My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; and I am afraid of thy judgments.

After the Second World War in 1945, there was a massive manhunt for those who collaborated with Nazi Germany authorities to cause the deaths of millions of innocent Jews in what has come to be known as The Holocaust. These perpetrators of evil were on the run because the new world order after the defeat of Germany sought to try them for crimes against humanity. There was no hiding place for them as the search was an intercontinental one that led to arrests in South American countries.
Evil doers do not seek refuge in the right place. Instead of seeking solace in the statutes of God, they got into more trouble by fleeing from justice. In God’s laws, the sinner has nowhere to hide outside God Himself. His statutes teach fear of the judgment of heaven. That should lead to sincere repentance and get them admitted into the commonwealth of righteousness and hope of everlasting life with Jesus.
The psalmist refers repeatedly to “thy word”, “commandments”, “statutes”, “testimonies” and “judgments” to underline his conviction that this is where security and hope lie. The Spirit-driven writer applies these concepts interchangeably to drive home the point that when one has the word of God; one has grabbed the universal and eternal counsel of the Lord. You do not need to run for safety in man’s wisdom again.
Today, a believer has a shelter in the word of God. Jesus never fails. His word is the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17) that will vanquish the enemy. His word is the hiding place. To benefit from the peace and safety in His word, a sinner must repent of all sins and receive Christ as Saviour.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Don’t hide from God; hide in Him!
