The Rivers State Government has charged media houses in the state to intensify enlightenment campaigns, so as to educate the people on the dreaded COVID-19.

The state commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon. Paulinus Nsirim made the appeal during a meeting with media executives across the state, yesterday.

Nsirim said the need for the message to be spread daily is to create the necessary awareness, as the second wave has been reported to be spiking across the globe.

He said the importance of such public enlightenment programs, is to educate and inform residents on the need to take preventive measures to protect themselves from the virus.

“Coronavirus is spiking in Rivers State and I strongly believe that media executives can utilize their various platforms to intensify public enlightenment in this direction,” he said.

He urged residents to obey all guidelines on COVID-19, as ‘It is better to breathe with a face mask than to breathe with a ventilator, ” he stated.

This is why the Mass media exists, for things like this. A lot of people especially in Nigeria do not take these covid 19 awareness seriously, as they should but for what the Rivers State government is about to do with the help of the Mass media is truly one big step to the fight of the second wave of this deadly virus.
So therefore, we all should also adhere to these Covid 19 guidelines.
No matter how uncomfortable and bad it may seem, it’s for the saving of lives and for the betterment of the nation.

It is the responsibility of the media to enlighten the public about the deadly covid-19 but citizens have to take responsibility by observing social distancing and other safety measures to curtail the spread of the virus. Thank you Honourable Commissioner. I observed at the moment, the Media are a bit relaxed when compared to what we saw on television and heard on radio during the first wave of Covid 19. I trust the Media would wake up better to their educational responsibility here and now to enlighten the citizens on the danger posed by this second wave of Covid 19. With the Media, the society would better informed on the danger of not keeping to Covid 19 guidelines.

Punchline from the Honourable Commissioner’s briefing. “Better to breathe through the mask than Ventilator” I want to deductively say none of us has something to loose by simple obedience to the Covid 19 guidelines and you have nothing to gain by disobedient to the guideline let us choose then to obey and enjoy the divideds obedience than to disobey and gain nothing.

The media has done all it can in enlightening the public about the dreaded monster called Corona virus, every Tom, Dick and Harry is now aware of it. Now the problem is that many don’t believe that the virus truly is here with us, even some of our religious leaders are the ones championing that course. They’ll say that as long as you have Jesus Christ as your Lord and saviour the virus will not come near you, or they’ll say it’s the sickness for the elite and political class and so on. I believe that the Government also has a role to play in order to make the public to believe that the virus is here, if the Government could give the media access to information and data of the victims of the virus and also Government should show seriousness in the fight against the virus rather than trying to politicize it.

To be Frankly speaking, obedient is better than sacrifice.and a stitch in Time saves nine, its quite obvious that most of the River’s elements find it more difficult to believe the truth behind the scenes, taking refuge in fake faith of “seeing is believing”. I really appreciate Mr governor’s effort towards the protection of the lives and properties of his people, not considering our nonchalant and carefree attitudes, towards the needful. The media with it’s marvelous efforts, serves as the vein through which blood travels round the body, this has been proven by the definition of mass communication/ mass media.thank you very much my honorable Paulinus Nsirim , for the time you’ve invested to intestify to the people of Rivers State against the wild virus (covid19) may the Almighty God bless you richly in Jesus name!
