The Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, has ordered the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest the immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, for contempt of court.
The order, issued on October 7, 2025 — just hours after Yakubu’s exit from office — stemmed from a case filed by the Action Alliance (AA) against INEC and its former chairman for allegedly failing to comply with an earlier court judgment.
Justice Funmilola Demi-Ajayi had, in a 2024 ruling (suit number FHC/OS/CS/194/2024), directed INEC to recognize Adekunle Rufai Omoaje as the National Chairman of the Action Alliance and to upload his name, along with those of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and state chairmen, on its official portal.
While INEC claimed to have complied with the order, the Action Alliance insisted that the commission had not fully implemented the ruling, as Omoaje’s name remained missing from the INEC website despite the inclusion of other state and NEC members.
The court, dissatisfied with INEC’s partial compliance, consequently ordered Yakubu’s arrest for disobeying its directive.
A copy of the latest order, obtained by reporters and signed by O.M. Kilani on behalf of the Court Registrar, reads in part:.“It is hereby ordered that the Inspector General of Police shall cause the arrest and shall charge the defendant/judgment debtors for contempt and committal proceedings within seven days of this ruling.”
