Amnesty International Nigeria has condemned the reported use of lethal force against protesters in Minna, Niger State, following the death of 37 youths allegedly in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The organisation said some protesters were reportedly shot and left with severe injuries during demonstrations over the deaths.
Amnesty International Nigeria also stated that at least two people were reportedly killed during the protests, describing the incidents as unacceptable and calling for an immediate end to what it described as such atrocities.
It called on the authorities to commence an independent and adequately resourced investigation into the deaths and the alleged use of excessive force against protesters.
The organisation further urged authorities to ensure that parents and relatives of the victims receive the necessary support to access justice and obtain adequate remedies.
Amnesty International Nigeria also called for the proper investigation of the matter and the prosecution of anyone found culpable.
