25 May ESOCS Devotional
TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 17:20-40
MEMORY VERSE: “David said to Saul: “Your majesty, no one should be afraid of this Philistine! I will go and fight him.” 1 Samuel 17:32 GV
Among all the components of human life, physical and spiritual, the Holy Spirit of God in the life of man is the strongest and most beneficial. The Holy Spirit is the carrier of the true knowledge of God and the source of exceptional faith in God. In our text today, we see David display knowledge and faith in God beyond human capacity.
No matter the physical and spiritual strength of the source of your trouble on earth, you have to realize that the God we serve is bigger than all human troubles. Goliath was bigger, taller, and stronger than all the men in Israel were, such that his appearance terrified the soldiers of Israel (1 Sam. 17:4-11). In verse 24, we read, “When the Israelites saw Goliath, they ran away in terror.”

It takes the knowledge of what God is and the magnitude of love He has for those who rely on Him to know that the heavy burden of human life cannot withstand the omnipotence of God (John 3:16). God will never let His elects suffer defeat and shame in the hands of the enemy. This knowledge is the key to our victory in life. David expressed this knowledge and acted on it. In verse 32, 37, we read, “David said to Saul, Your majesty, no one should be afraid of this Philistine! I will go and fight him. The LORD has saved me from lions and bears, he will save me from this Philistine.”
It is usually encouraging when brethren follow in support of the one who rakes up by words and action, the truth that God is omnipotent and can do the impossible, no matter what. Though the Israelites were afraid of Goliath, they believed David because he relied on the power of God. In verse 37b, we read of Saul: “Alright, Saul answered, go and the LORD be with you.”
Let us therefore seek to be filled with the Spirit of God that gives knowledge and power of God (Acts 1:8, John 1:12).
