The 2020 Calabar Carnival, what has been largely described as one of Africa’s biggest tourist attractions, has been cancelled.
This is following statements by the Eric Anderson, the Cross Rivers State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism. Anderson made the statement during a live radio interview.
Although the commissioner cited COVID-19 as the reason for the cancellation, stakeholders point to security challenges plaguing the state in the wake of the widespread #ENDSARS protests.
This is the first time the acclaimed Carnival has been called off since its inception in 2004.
