Some youths who claim to be from Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State, the hometown of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, have taken to the streets of Opobo to protest what they described as worsening hardship and widespread unemployment in the area.
The protesting youths marched through parts of the community carrying placards with various inscriptions, calling on authorities to address what they said were basic development challenges affecting the area.
Some of the placards read: “Peaceful protest. Good water ✗, Light ✗, Empowerment ✗,” and “Come to our rescue, Your Excellency.”
Others carried messages such as “Peaceful protest. We the youths of Opobo are jobless. We need empowerment/job opportunity.”
The demonstrators said the protest was aimed at drawing attention to the lack of employment opportunities and other basic amenities, including access to potable water and electricity.
They urged the government to intervene by creating jobs and empowerment programmes to improve the living conditions of youths in the area.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official response from the Rivers State Government regarding the protest.
