A young girl was rescued on Thursday morning after being reportedly abandoned half-nude by suspected internet fraudsters, popularly known as “Yahoo boys,” near the building materials area of Mile 3 Market in Diobu, Port Harcourt.
Human rights advocate Prince Wiro disclosed that he initiated the rescue operation after being alerted by one of his team members, Chijioke Enyia. According to reports, the girl was seen being dropped off from a vehicle and left at the scene in a vulnerable state.
Sympathizers who witnessed the incident placed the visibly distressed girl into a drum half-filled with water, presumably to help calm her. Though she was unable to speak, the girl managed to write down her name and a phone number, which reportedly belongs to a relative. Contact was made with the individual, who stated they were on their way to pick her up.
However, Wiro expressed concern that the person claiming to be a relative could potentially be one of her alleged abductors — a possibility based on his past experience in similar cases. He instructed his team to contact the Nkpolu Police Division to ensure proper verification of the individual’s identity and to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
Police officers from Nkpolu Division have taken the girl into protective custody while awaiting the arrival of the purported relatives. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
