Lere Olayinka, Special Adviser on Public Communication to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has asserted that Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara does not have the authority to control local government operations within the state.
Olayinka’s remarks came in response to Fubara’s statewide address, which called for the Head of Local Government Administration (HLGA) to assume management of the councils.
He emphasized that the constitution grants the Rivers State House of Assembly the power to extend the terms of democratically elected local government officials. Olayinka further noted that a recent Supreme Court ruling limits governors’ authority over local council governance.
