Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has issued a stern warning to the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, cautioning him against visiting the state without prior notice.
Speaking while receiving Honourable Marcus Onobun, a former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and current representative of Esan West/Esan Central/Igueben Federal Constituency, into the All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Okpebholo declared that Obi’s security would not be guaranteed if he enters the state unannounced.
“There is a new sheriff in town,” the governor said. “Peter Obi cannot come to Edo without informing me. If he does, he will be responsible for whatever happens to him. I am serious about this.”
Governor Okpebholo also criticized Obi for allegedly claiming he had no money, yet donating ₦15 million during a recent visit to the state. He claimed that Obi’s last visit led to unrest in Benin, resulting in the death of three people.
“Someone who said he had no money donated ₦15 million. Where did he get it from?” the governor asked.
He reiterated that future visits by the former Anambra State governor must be cleared with the Edo State government.
